Cervical cancer and HPV: The most important at a glance

HPV = Human papillomaviruses

HPV are viruses that are mostly transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse. They are considered the main cause of cervical cancer.

A large proportion of people become infected with HPV

It is assumed that in Switzerland about 70 to 80% of sexually active women are infected with HPV once in their lifetime. An infection is usually transient - this means that the virus leaves the body again without having caused any symptoms or damage. In some cases, however, the body cannot fight the viruses sufficiently and the infection becomes chronic. Especially if high-risk types are present, such a chronic infection with HP viruses can develop into a precancerous stage and eventually cancer.

HPV-positive does not mean cervical cancer. But HPV-positive indicates the risk of disease and thus gives the opportunity to conduct more regular checkups.

There are different types of human papillomaviruses. A distinction is made between "lowrisk" types and "highrisk" types.

HPV Low Risk Types

The low-risk types often cause warts in the genital area. These warts are annoying, but not dangerous.

HPV High Risk Types

The high-risk types, on the other hand, in the vast majority of cases do not show any symptoms at all. And that is what makes them so dangerous. Because if you are unknowingly infected with HPV, there is not only a great risk that you will infect your sexual partners. Because in addition, an undetected chronic HPV infection and irregular visits to the gynecologist mean a high risk of uterine disease.

A vaccination against HPV has been available for several years. However, this only protects against the most dangerous types. For this reason, it cannot be ruled out that you will become infected despite an HPV vaccination.

Cervical cancer almost always develops due to chronic infection with HPV. Thus, this usually precedes the cancer. If the HPV Home Test detects an infection, your gynecologist can monitor the cells on the cervix even more efficiently and you can therefore prevent the cancer even better.

Absolutely!

The gynecologist usually only checks the cells for cell changes during the annual screening. This is done with the so-called PAP smear. In the case of a positive result, the first changes in the cervix have already taken place. Only then is an HPV test performed as standard, which should provide information about the reason for the cell changes. In the worst case, however, it is already cancer.

This is why an additional HPV test is important

On the other hand, if the test for HP viruses is done beforehand, the risk of developing cancer of the cervix in the future can be determined in advance. If the HPV test is positive, you know that you will need to go for more frequent gynecological checkups in the coming years. Thus, a precancerous condition can be detected and eliminated even earlier.

The costs for an HPV test are not yet generally covered by health insurance. But try to submit your bill to your supplementary insurance.

There is one exception: If cell changes are detected during a Pap smear during the gynecological examination, an HPV test is usually performed afterwards. And this is then also covered by the health insurance.

After ordering a MiSANTO HPV Home-Testing Kit you will receive an invoice by e-mail, which you can then pay by invoice. A MiSANTO HPV Home-Testing Kit will cost you CHF 235. We know, this is a lot of money - but certainly well invested, namely in your long-term health!

I have HPV - and now?

No need to panic. An infection with HPV is usually transient - this means that the virus will leave your body again without having caused any symptoms or damage. But an infection can also become chronic. Therefore, you should have a gynecological examination at regular intervals from the time of a positive result in order to detect possible cell changes at an early stage.

Possible results and what to do
